Too Much Star Wars? Only if the stories are bad
The latest in the “won’t there be too much of it” saga in the movie world comes courtesy of Star Wars Rogue One and Stephen Colbert as interpreted by Jen Chaney. When superhero movies in general, and Marvel in particular, decided to release five or six films a year people wondered if the movie audience will get tired of them. The problem is that the really good movies are basically about the same things we will watch for years to come. As long as the story is good, the genre doesn’t have to worry.
No one has ever wondered if movie audiences will get tired of rom-coms. No one wonders if people will tire of action films, dramas or based on a true story films. Superhero films and space operas are their own genres. The only way that people will tire of these films is if they forget why they exist. While the special effects are nice, it is the story and the characters that drive a successful film. Know your characters, keep to the story without extras that do not contribute and be true to the world.
The Star Wars universe (and the Marvel universe) have plenty of good stories and characters to draw from, and the recent success of the films shows that the companies are doing something right. Story writers can find any story within these universes. It just takes a group of people who are committed to making sure that the worlds and characters do not become too similar, and that they stay true to form. Unless Star Wars goes DCing it up, the franchise and its films can go on indefinitely. (and there is plenty of written material to draw from.
