The most ridiculous greatest music acts of all time
It is a good thing that ridiculous doesn’t mean terrible. Here are the greatest of all ridiculous bands.
The B-52s – Formed in 1976, the B-52’s rocked the ‘80s with an apostrophe. “Rock Lobster” is a cult classic that Mormons find acceptable, and everyone goes down to, at least on the dance floor. The lyrics about someone finding a rock, no, a rock lobster, are just strange. “Is The You, Modean?” is no less weird, and “Hot Pants Explosion” expounded the virtue of thunder thighs. In fact, about the straightest music that this group has produced includes the songs “Love Shack” with its rusty tin roof and “Roam” if you want to. 2NU – In 1991, 2NU became the weirdest group out there to hit the mainstream. “This Is Ponderous” hit the airwaves with its quirky vision of a dreamscape, and its rap like, story time vocals. “DDS Blues” explored a side of life that few people enjoy, you know, the one that could put a booger look on a pitbull, and Nardo became the greatest marble player who ever lived. About the closest this group got to a straight song was a cover of Eric Burdon and War’s “Spill the Wine”, which, with its hot flames of fire, is not all that less ridiculous than anything else they sang. Flight of the Conchords – What do two New Zealanders have that the rest of America doesn’t? A successful comedy act, an HBO series, the musical creator for The Muppets and the bad guy in Men in Black III. Whether Brett is moving far, far away to Coco’s house and no longer residing with Jemaine or the duo is facing off against a fruit vendor that doesn’t like Kiwis, or Jemaine is practicing his rap skills as the hiphopopotamus whose lyrics are bottomless…, this duo has no mainstream music, even if you are the most beautiful girl in the room or a leggy blonde. Weird Al Yankovic – If you don’t know Weird Al, you have been living under a rock. Yankovic, the granddaddy of ridiculous (that is only a slight comment on age but more about his importance and the respect fans have for him – I hope he takes it that way), has kept himself and his music relevant. He creates music like a surgeon skewering both pop culture and punking pop hits long before that was a thing. Some musicians have taken exception to Yankovic’s treatment of their songs, but Weird Al continues to roll white and nerdy. His latest album gives aluminum foil the royal treatment while chastising an entire generation for their word crimes. Weird Al may have lost on Jeopardy! and he may have been fat, but he has never needed to be mainstream. |
