On July 17, 2015, Disneyland celebrated its 60th anniversary by announcing “the Million Dollar Dazzle.” As part of the celebration activities, President Michael Colglazier reaffirmed Disneyland’s mission quoting Walt Disney’s speech from opening day adding that Disneyland couldn’t be the happiest place on earth if it weren’t also a good neighbor.
To that end, Disneyland will be giving grants throughout the coming year to local organizations in the Anaheim area. These grants will total $1 million, and the first donation went to the Girl Scouts of Orange County.
The days other activities included a performance of “Feed the Birds” by Richard Sherman, long time Disney song writer and part of the team responsible for the music of Mary Poppins and It’s a Small World, and Ashley Brown, the first Broadway Mary Poppins. The song was a favorite of Walt Disney.
Guests to the park received cupcakes, and cast members, including 10 of the 15 living cast members from opening day were honored in a pre-parade that featured 60 different Disney characters.
Opened in 1955, Disneyland was the first of its kind theme park and hosts over 16 million people every year.
