Agatha Christie's 'Murder on the Orient Express' twists and turns on great writing
I’m afraid I’ve gone and ruined the new ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ movie for myself. I watched the 1974 movie, which I assume has revealed all of the secrets of the Orient Express to me. Agatha Christie’s classic novel turned film provides an amazing amount of surprise, and like its remake, a surprising number of A-list actors.
Albert Finney is unrecognizable as the legendary Hercule Poirot, who has to sift through the red herrings to get to the truth. The rest of the cast includes Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Jacqueline Bisset, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave and Michael York. Finney does a lot of talking in this one as he confronts each of the passengers on the train. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say Christie knows how to set up and solve a murder.
In ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, it isn’t just the twist in the middle that’ll get you, it is the twist at the end. The new film looks to have more special effects and the cast is top notch; the only real question you should be left with is who did the killing. If you can’t make it to the theater, find the classic and enjoy what Christie has wrought.
