'A Brief Guide to Star Wars' lives up to its name
“A Brief Guide to Star Wars: The Unauthorized Inside Story” lives up to part of its title. It is brief. At almost 250 pages long, the book explores the history of the first 6 Star Wars movies and the media, action figures and other cultural icons they inspired.
Quick sketches of George Lucas’ childhood and what led him into film make up the first couple of chapters. After that, each chapter explores a certain segment of the films’ histories. Author Brian J. Robb treats the prequels as if they are good and is often too kind to their creator.
While it seems that he is biased in favor of the material and the man, Robb does a good job of explaining what happened during the filming and what happened between films. Unfortunately, the book is far too short for an in-depth analysis of any one of the films, Lucas himself, or any of the projects associated with the Star Wars franchise.
Still, “A Brief Guide to Star Wars” is a nice read and introduces the several TV series, as well as other shows that the casual Star Wars fan may have missed. What the book lacks in force, it makes up for in scope. If you want a quick read about the real story, Robb gives you a nice place to start.
