Warm, endearing tales from 'Princess Bride' Set? 'as You Wish'
With his book, As You Wish, Cary Elwes tells the tale of the making of The Princess Bride, and it is a tale as glorious as the movie. Written with gratitude and humor, Elwes perfectly captures the feeling of the movie and explains it as an extension of the feelings on set.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the stars of the film seem to be incredibly grateful for the iconic roles they were allowed to play. There is no anger or regret that, in spite of all of the other work they have done, they will be remembered best for this movie. Elwes expects “As you wish” will be on his tombstone. Mandy Patinkin says that people always ask him to say his line, “and I never let them down.” Stories from the rest of the cast run along the same lines.
The biggest impression on Elwes seems to have been made by the late Andre the Giant. Andre appears to have embodied the spirit of the movie and appears in a lot of the book. Elwes made sure to include everyone in his memoir, and each of the remaining stars have contributed some of their memories in asides.
For those who have seen The Princess Bride, this book is a must read. For those who have missed out on The Princess Bride, go see it and then get this book. It is clearly written with love, and I, for one, am thankful that Elwes has given us this memory to live and relive.
