Deadpool artist breaks 4th wall at Emerald Valley Comic Fest
Comic book artist Marat Mychaels examined Deadpool’s popularity. While at Emerald Valley Comic Fest on Oct. 3, 2015, Mychaels talked about working on the Deadpool comics, how that led to Deadpooh and his own one-shot parody called Do You Pooh?
Mychaels started working in the business as an 18-year old assistant for Rob Liefeld and believes that Deadpool is “very much a sign of the times.”
“He’s kind of like DC’s Daredevil,” says Mychaels. “It was the only time in my career where I read a script and I laughed.”
He had to read it twice. The second time so that he could figure out how he was going to lay out the panels.
Liefeld came up with the idea for Deadpool after a Spider-Man artist talked about how easy it was to draw the Spider-Man character versus the characters that Liefeld was drawing. Deadpool is Spider-Man with swords. The other inspiration was Snake-Eyes.
The one character that Mychaels would like to draw is Night Wing.
“I think he has so much potential that’s untapped,” says Mychaels.
Do You Pooh? came out of working with the creator of Deadpooh. With differences in what people should be paid (see video), Mychaels decided to move on to his next project. When he found out he could do his own parody, he decided to do a one-shot. There are several variant covers for the comic book, but just one story.
Mychaels has visited the set of the Deadpool movie. His take:
“It’s going to f—king rock!” Mychaels felt like that “13-year old kid again” and says “that movie’s going to kill.”
