Alice's Curious Labyrinth 2015
This is one of the signature attractions at Disneyland Paris because it has a distinctly European flavor and is not reproduced anywhere in the United States. Alice’s Curious Labyrinth is a hedge maze that gives people free rein as they wander through the curves, into dead ends, and towards the castle where the King stands looking over everything else. Of course, since it is a walkthrough, the crowds in line can be overwhelming. However, a gatekeeper keeps people in the labyrinth to a regular number so that it isn’t packed shoulder to shoulder.
Alice’s Curious Labyrinth is another victim of deferred maintenance. Red hearts have faded in the sun to become pink along with red anything else. Paint is chipping, and one of the spinning eyes of the Cheshire Cat that dominates the area has a small chip in it, making it seem like he has two pupils. The Queen hides behind a maintenance wall as do other characters who are unable to do their jobs when guests pass.
Those characters that do work are activated by motion and talk, and honk or have some motion associated with them. The jumping water works before the labyrinth is open and, during the winter months, is sensibly turned off when guests are in the maze. All of the places represented here are done so with characters that look much like the old characters in the Alice in Wonderland attraction at Disneyland Anaheim.
In spite of the maintenance issues, a trip through the labyrinth is enjoyable. Paths are hidden enough that it is possible to get to a dead end, and that is part of the fun. Also the view from the castle in the center is great. Perhaps the best part is that this attraction could get a live-action Alice in Wonderland overlay without disturbing any of its integrity.
