Terminator: Genisys, a new beginning could spell the end
Terminator: Genisys suffered from a dismal debut and bad reviews, and even with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke and Dr. Who hero Matt Smith (billed as Matthew Smith), the movie bombed in the United States.
The Bad The first 30 minutes of the film are problematic because, let’s face it, time travel is messy and previous knowledge is a hindrance to understanding what is going on. Without any explanation, the audience is left wondering what happened to John Connor and how Sarah Connor became a badass before she met Kyle Reese. There are other questions that the audience just has to go with until the exposition can be made. This movie feels like an ‘80s action film. While that shouldn’t be a bad thing, it is because compared to other action films, there just doesn’t seem to be much in the way of special effects and actual action. The idea is ridiculous because there are plenty of special effects and action sequences, it is just that there is also plodding and slow comedy and weird testosterone moments between man and machine. The Good Schwarzenegger does a great job in his return as the T-100 and the T-800. His comedy is funny even if it is slow. He certainly shows that he may be old, he is not obsolete. Clarke is equally engaging as Sarah Connor. She provides a strength and rebelliousness to the character that Linda Hamilton lacked; however, Hamilton had the better character arc as we saw her Sarah Connor become the fighter that we know from the previous incarnations of the series. Smith fans should turn out in droves to see his small but essential role in the film. He is entertaining, even when the camera lingers too long in foreshadowing his role to come. The Ugly – Spoiler Alert Unless the foreign box office provides Terminator: Genisys with enough of a reason to do a sequel, the series is likely over and the mid credits scene will be rendered pointless. This movie does provide an answer to everyone’s question about sending a terminator even further back into the past, but in doing so, it doesn’t jump the shark. (Why not send a terminator back to the 1800s?) It would suck to be John Connor because no matter what he or his mom do, he is destined to fight the machines in a desperate attempt to push Judgement Day a few more years into the future. Make no mistake about it, though, Judgement Day is coming. The only question is if the terminator will be back to fight against it. |
