Billy Dee Williams paints life as an actor
Billy Dee Williams most memorable experience as Lando was
“the cape, of course.”
“It was pretty awesome and pretty daunting,” says Williams about The Empire Strikes Back.
He wishes he had kept the cape. He used a replica on Dancing with the Stars that he also did not keep but thought he could still get.
Williams likes to keep Lando’s voice the same, so he does the voice acting anytime that Lando comes up in animation like The Lego Movie.
“I love Lando. I own Lando. I can’t even think of anybody else being Lando. I am Lando,” says Williams. “I am also all of the other characters [I’ve performed].”
In a fight between Han Solo and Lando, Williams was conflicted about who would win. Lando is a gambler; he’s not really into fisticuffs.
“As far as charming somebody, Lando would win,” says Williams.
There are a couple of theories about why Lando wore the same outfit as Han while flying the Falcon.
“As quiet as it’s kept, they were a couple,” says Williams.
Other theories proposed were that they came with the Falcon, and because Lando wanted to get into Leia’s pants, which Williams scoffed at. Lando wouldn’t need the outfit to seduce Leia.
“I have a real respect for Harrison,” says Williams. He has a really wonderful and beautiful relationship with his children.”
Williams doesn’t know if Lando Calrissian will be back for Episode 7, but there is a twitter campaign to #bringbackLando. Tweet it to @realBDW.
Brian’s Song was an “act of love.” It was the first time that Williams played someone who was still living. Gale Sayers was on set, and Williams would observe him to pick up cues and mannerisms to make Williams’ portrayal more authentic. Williams says that the movie was really one of those experiences that most of us have once on this journey through the trail of tears on this barren soil.
Williams is not just and actor but also a painter. He has works of art hanging in places like The Smithsonian, the Schomburg Museum in New York and the Kansas City Jazz Museum. His work is also available at bdwworldart.com.
