Music Mystery: Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon
Oh, where to start? This really not my kind of music. Even if it had more lyrics than what it has, it wouldn’t be my kind of music. I don’t need you or anyone else yelling at me Lil Jon! (By the way, how’s Robin Hood and his Merry Men? Did you escape from the 1960s?)
Anyway, in this apparent masterpiece of pop music hitting #7 on July 12, 2014 (down from #6 the previous week) on America’s Top 40, Lil Jon shouts “turn down for what” several times and, for the sake of doing something different, throws in a “fire up your loud \ ‘nother round of shots” though this would make more sense if it were “fire up! You’re loud! \ ‘nother round of shots.” Either way, the sum total of the song is yelling these words while DJ Snake hisses a dance heavy rap beat behind Lil Jon. So the question is what does he turn down for? The cops because his neighbors complained about the noise is the most plausible supposition. Maybe, he turns down for his neighbors because it is the right thing to do, especially after about 11 p.m. This might also be a question to his friend who went in for a job interview. He just didn’t hear what his friend applied for and was denied. Turned down for what? Maybe he just got a call from maid service. He’s had the “Do not disturb” sign on his door all day, and they just want to know if he would like his bed turned down. Turned down for what? Because it is a nice thing to have done? It is possible that he has a feather bed, and he has been told that he needs to rotate it from time to time but doesn’t understand why. Turn down for what? Maybe his significant other wants to get romantic and asks him to dim the lights, but he is distracted by other concerns and asks why the lights should be dimmed. Turn down for what? Maybe he has propositioned someone and suggested several things, but he or she says no, and Lil Jon wonders which part the person doesn’t want to partake in. Turned down for what? Maybe he is on a road trip with a buddy and the end up going down a dead end. He told his buddy before they went down the road that it wasn’t the right one. Now he wants to know why his friend decided to take that road anyway. Turned down for what? Or maybe the friend is trying to get him to go down a road that doesn’t make sense to Lil Jon. Why would he go on that road? Turn down for what? It could be a list of reasons that his friend is giving him that women have told him about why they would not date him. You’re not a returned missionary. Turned down for what? You might be the right fit, but you’re not the right size. Turned down for what? I’m just not feeling it. Turned down for what? If you keep asking me out, I’ll keep saying yes, but it will never go any further than where it is right now. Turned down for what? We shouldn’t date. Turned down for what? You’re just too nice. Turned down for what? Why does this song need to give two people writing credits? I really don’t want to ponder all of the reasons and just hope it is because one penned the lyrics on a cocktail napkin and the other created the music to go with them. Other than that we may never know what the turn down was all about. |
