Editing for self-publishers and websites
If you are planning on self-publishing, there are several
reasons why you need an editor. While it is easy to make changes to an online
version of your book, essay or article, making changes to a hard copy version
can only happen at the next printing. Typos, misused words and poor grammar
will be there in the first edition for all to see. You deserve better than
that.
No matter how good of a writer you are, you can’t see your own errors. The more that you go over your own manuscript, the less likely you are to catch the detail errors. Go over something long enough and it starts to seem right.
You don’t know what you don’t know. Even people who have a degree in English do not necessarily understand all of the grammar rules in the English language. The public school system tends to gloss over the idea of grammar, so the first time many Americans learn about grammar is when they take a foreign language class. Relying on a spell check program may not catch errors that involve words that are misused like "there," "their" and "they’re," or "plain" and "plane."
Every writer needs an editor, but good editors seem difficult to find. It is nice to have input from your friends, but unless they have editing credentials, they aren’t qualified to do much more than find the major errors and give you a pat on the back. Additionally, your friends want you to succeed, but they also want you to feel good about yourself, so they may not tell you what you need to hear about your book, essay or writing.
Paying for an editor will ensure that you get someone who is detached from your writing. That person will be able to give you their opinion without worrying about friendship or making you feel good about yourself. Once the editor has given your book the once or twice through, you should be ready to publish.
