31 flavors? Don’t be lazy
Marianne’s creates ice cream heaven
In sort of a bribe to leave Santa Cruz, mom would always
take my sister and me to one of our favorite ice cream places. My sister always
voted for Swenson’s, and I wanted to go to the local Marianne’s. Fortunately,
when it comes to ice cream choices, Marianne’s is still around and still
serving the best ice cream this side of the Pacific. The number of flavors
available is off the chart and makes that place that sells 31 flavors seem like
an underachieving cousin who decided to phone it in for the day.
Back in the day, it didn’t matter where we went, my sister would get mint chocolate chip, and I would get bubble gum ice cream. Long after my sister had finished her ice cream, I still had bubble gum that I could smack, pop and blow bubbles with – and thus torture my sister with her lack of foresight as I enjoyed my ice cream for much longer than she could enjoy hers.
Marianne’s still offers those childhood favorites along with more prosaic flavors like chocolate and vanilla. However, there are more exciting flavors available like cantaloupe, cardamom pistachio, ginger and Mexican chocolate.
While my flavor palate may have grown up, it is good to know that Marianne’s still offers a complete ice cream experience with which to end a wonderful day at the beach. The place is popular, so be prepared to park along the street, and make sure to grab a number when you enter the shop. The helpful crew will get to you quickly and you will be well satisfied. Be sure to bring cash because Marianne’s does not accept credit cards or checks.
