Cosplayer elaborates on costume process at Malta Comic Con 2015
At Malta Comic Con 2015, Italian cosplayer Flavia Anemone de Benedetta broke down the process she went through to make her Hana from Gate 7 costume. She started by making the pattern from fabric and newspaper. This first step was the most important. A mistake here could have ruined the outfit further down the line.
She hand dipped the outfit in three different types of colors and had to mix brands to get the color she was looking for. After dipping, she used a brush and then air brushed the outfit so that the color blended from top to bottom.
Flavia designed and embroidered the lotus flower on the obi. She dipped the scarf. The poms, she created by wrapping the yarn around paper, tying the yarn off and then cutting it. The under garment for the dress was ornately designed even though only the collar and the cuffs could be seen when she wore the entire costume. Hand painted with stencils, the garment included goldfish, which bring good luck.
“The wig was the hardest part.” She bought a long haired wig and cut the hair from it. She then glued the hair onto a bow. She says that the hair was everywhere. The hair decorations are made from foam board, and the hair piece itself is easy to put on.
To complete the costume, she carved a tiger from pieces of foam rubber that she had assembled. The tiger was larger than Flavia, and she hand painted it. Flavia has started her own brand – Haikucosplay
