Capitalism is based on being selfish
Capitalism is founded on the idea that the individual will do what is best for the individual, and that will be good for society. As animals, people are in competition with each other for the best mate, the best food and the best life. Capitalism takes this Darwinistic view of animals and applies it to an economic system.
The foundation of capitalism tears people apart. There is no reason to help someone else unless the person helping gets something in return, and good feelings, like the kind you get from lutefisk, just aren’t going to cut it. There are altruistic souls out there who want to help others, but they generally get chewed up and spat out by the system and by those who abuse their kindness.
Until people find a way to deal with a portion of life that has infected every other portion, there will also be those who have to suffer at the hands of the economic system. In order for a capitalist system to survive, there have to be the poor who are scrabbling to make ends meet. The constant pressure of bills that include food, rent and grocery, create a pliable social layer that cannot do anything other than work and learn helplessness.
In World War II, capitalism and competition took a backseat to the good of the nation. Sputnik inspired cooperation during the Cold War, which created the space program. Businesses that have a culture of teamwork thrive over the long-term, even if competition between individuals can grant a short-term benefit. The United States could achieve greatness again if its citizens were allowed to work together again.
