Karen Gillan takes time for FanX
“I was tormented through my entire rein” on Doctor Who, says Karen Gillan. Matt Smith was continually jumping out and scaring her. “I was at the receiving end of all the pranks.”
Someone put a photo of Mrs. Doubtfire on Gillan’s trailer door “I guess ‘cause I sound like her.”
“Steven Moffat likes to not tell us things,” says Gillan. The cast didn’t know who River Song was until they got the scripts.
The villains on Doctor Who that scare her the most are the ones she can’t remember and the weeping angels.
“It’s really random that we both came from that episode,” says Gillan about the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi and her being in “Fires of Pompeii.”
Her favorite episode is “The Eleventh Hour.” Her little cousin was in it and did a good job of setting up Amy Pond.
Gillan was exposed to Doctor Who because her mom is a fan.
“My mum watched it all the time because she’s the biggest Whovian ever,” says Gillan.
There was no adlibbing on the set because Moffat’s writing could take on bigger dimensions and mean something 10 episodes later.
“My favorite thing to explore was this really hard outer shell,” says Gillan of Pond. “I wanted to chip away at that” and find her areas of vulnerability.
“I didn’t plan it this way,” says Gillan. “The roles are amazing.”
“My character is really sadistic,” says Gillan of her part in Guardians of the Galaxy. “It was really fun to play the bad guy.” You get to indulge your evil side.
“Never fight with Zoe Saldana,” says Gillan. It took Gillan two months to learn the choreography while it took Saldana two days.
Gillan had to shave her head for the role.
“I found the whole thing really funny until I woke up the next morning,” says Gillan.
