The fifth best thing about Salt Lake City: Environmental Community
Did somebody say there was an environmentalist community in Salt Lake City? Utah may be one of the reddest states in the union, and thanks to gerrymandering, it will remain that way for a long time. While most people are holding up profits before people and traditional family values that include fleecing the public of beauty and nature and allowing children to die because of air quality issues, there is a small group of determined people fighting for everyone to breathe clean air and live a healthy lifestyle that puts people before the profits of corporations.
Peaceful Uprising was formed in the wake of Timothy DeChristopher’s trial, and subsequent sentence to jail, for disrupting a public land auction that was later ruled illegal. The organization’s members fight for social and environmental justice, looking to upset the status quo so that people can understand what is going on behind closed doors.
Utah Tar Sands Resistance is working against the development of tar sands in Utah. This type of fossil fuel pollutes more than regular oil because it has to be strip mined and then refined before it can even go to the refineries. Those refineries happen to be located on the Wasatch Front, so for those who think the inversion is bad now…
HEAL Utah has been at the forefront of the environmental movement in Utah for a long time. While Matt Pacenza’s moustache and sense of humor may get most of the attention, HEAL Utah should be a vivid reminder of what happens when industry and government are allowed to run amok. It should also remind people of what citizens are able to do when they get together to fight against the inevitable health effects of nuclear and other environmental toxins.
There are several other organizations like Utah Moms for Clean Air, Green Drinks and MESA that are working to make things better for Utah. If it wasn’t for them, Utahns may have had to face worst catastrophes than the oil spills in Liberty Park and Willard Bay, and there may be no recourse for those breathing the toxins that Stericycle and the refineries are legally allowed to dump into the Wasatch air shed.
With Utah’s majesty, wonder and history of being downwind, it is surprising that Utahns aren’t rising up in numbers too large to count to create the environment that it should be known for instead of the one that it has. For now, this small group of individuals and organizations is doing everything they can so that Utahns can be healthier, happier and able to breathe clean air.
