Malta Comics Expo 2014 shoots the Sailor Moon
At their first session for Malta Comics Expo 2014, the American cast of Sailor Moon, Linda Ballantyne, Susan Roman, Katie Griffin and Toby Proctor, talked about their experience on the show.
“We never understood what was going on while we were doing it,” says Roman, who was surprised at the success of Sailor Moon.
According to Ballantyne, there were no scripts, the cast worked alone most of the time and they didn’t even know the storyline.
“It’s all disjointed,” says Griffin. The cast would record different episodes, out of sequence, during the same day of recording.
Producer Nicole Thuault would write the lines on acetate that the actors would read from the projection.
“On that show, we worked really, really hard,” says Griffin.
It was important for the cast to get the sounds to match the mouth movements of the characters.
Sailor Moon was a success because the actors were really good at getting it right out of the gate. Everyone had to be really good really quickly.
According to Griffin, the cast is hopeful that the new Sailor Moon dub is successful even if they are not in the show “because the fans have been waiting so long.”
“It just wasn’t in the cards for us to redo it,” says Griffin.
Roman played Snowy from TinTin, who only spoke in barks. When she would finish recording, she would say to herself “you just barked a mortgage payment, maybe two mortgage payments.”
