Explore New Ideas at the Salt Lake City Public LIbrary
The Salt Lake City Public Library has designated “Exploring New Ideas” as one of its five key outcomes. By bringing people together to discuss timely topics, the library hopes to build understanding between people.
“We need to know each other better,” says Safi Safiullah, program coordinator and outcome lead exploring new ideas. Safi says that one of the great things about his job is that there are no limitations.
The exploring new ideas program has coordinated several events including a gathering of Salt Lake City’s six living mayors, a talk by a Nobel laureate and bringing together the two sides of the immigration issue for a discussion.
“Without dialogue and discussion,” says Safi, “no one can live peacefully.”
If members of the community have a good idea for a program that they would like to see at the library, they can contact Safi at (801)322-8191 or email him at [email protected].
By going to meet the people and see their need, Safi is working to break the traditional view of the library as a place where people get a book.
“Bringing people together and reaching out to the community plays to my strength,” he says.
One program scheduled for the weekend including September 11, 2011 will look at cultural and religious pluralism. Another program planned for September and October may address health and how it relates to environment and nutrition.
