Adventure Thru Inner Space and Disney Magic
Adventure Thru Inner Space was sponsored by the evil corporation Monsanto, but it was still one of my favorite rides at Disneyland. It was another of those rides that was magical to a young me, and I still really don’t know how the Imagineers did it.
Aside from the Mickey Mouse molecule at the end, which was pretty cool, Adventure Thru Inner Space actually miniaturized guests down to the size of an atom and maybe smaller. I have no idea how Disneyland could accomplish such a thing.
The idea is that people would sit in an omnimover car (known as Doom Buggies over at The Haunted Mansion) and go through a giant microscope that would cause them to get smaller.
Here’s where the inexplicable magic came in – You could see the people becoming smaller as the cars traversed through a clear section of the microscope! I would watch those cars the entire time, and I could never figure out how the people looked like the people in line.
By the time the attraction was shut down and later replaced with Star Tours, I still didn’t understand how it worked.
Adventure Thru Inner Space was a great place to go when you wanted to get on an attraction that didn’t have a huge line. One of my favorite memories was going with my Grandpa Bob on this ride the year that we took him to Disneyland for one last time.
