'About Time' to enjoy a Sweet little film
About Time isn’t the movie that you think it is, but it is the movie that it should be. The advertising campaign is a little misleading, but in this case that is a good thing. The story is about a man who can travel back in time within his own timeline and alter the course of his life.
When you can go back in time to relive the days that you pick, this is exactly how your life should turn out. However, what makes this film different is that even when given the chance to make the wrong decision, Tim still chooses to do the right thing. Even when there are tough choices, he still seems to make the right choice. That alone would be enough to set this movie apart from most of what American movies and TV are all about. About Time, however, takes it a bit further and gives you a sweet movie going experience that isn’t going to gut you or blow your ear drums out. It is a rare movie that can help you to regain your humanity. Even though this film is from the same people that brought the world the wildly improbable Notting Hill, do not expect the same level of incoherent coincidence and sappy sentimentalism. Where Notting Hill was about an American superstar falling in love with a handsome and yet lonely English bookstore owner, About Time is less fantastic despite its time travel element. The world is populated with people who genuinely care about each other even with all of their eccentricities. This is a place that you would love to live. In the end, the audience comes to know how life should be lived regardless of a person’s circumstances, and if you watched closely enough, you will see the same theme at the beginning of the film. |
