Buy local first and support your community
Buy Local First Week begins on Friday, November 25, 2011 and continues through December 2, 2011. A national campaign designed to encourage people to spend their money at their local shops instead of the big box stores kicks off on a day that is known for its deep discounts, long lines and consumer chaos.
“We know that we are going to spend a fair amount of money even though the economy is tight,” says Kristen Lavelett, marketing assistant for Local First Utah. “Your money goes a lot farther when you spend it locally.
Of every $100 spent at a chain retailer about $13 will continue to circulate locally. A local business will keep about $45 in the community creating a larger benefit for the local economy.
Local First Utah has developed an internet coupon to make shopping locally cheaper this holiday season. About 85 local businesses are participating in the Gift Shift Coupon program. The coupon is a universal coupon good at all of the participating business. The customer just needs to download and print it and take it to the participating retailers including the King’s English, Wild Grape Bistro and Especially For You.
Lavelett encourages everyone to “take the challenge to shift 10 percent of their spending” to local businesses where gifts are more likely to be unique.
