Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice
Not Enough Wonder (Woman)
Do I really have to say “Spoiler Alert?” Yes? Okay…
SPOILER ALERT
Batman Versus Superman is as long as plodding as the theme song for Lex Luthor or the movie's name. Batman is as crazy as Luthor ends up being in this film, and is easily manipulated. While this might be explained by Luthor’s genius, it is never set up as such. In fact, the premise that Batman could even come close to beating Superman is based on Batman’s superior intellect and tactical skills. Unfortunately, this weak point in the story takes far too long to set up and then is easily disrupted by coincidental names.
While the action is pretty decent, the only scenes that are worth watching are those involving Gal Gadot. Wonder Woman is someone to behold. Her theme music matches her awesomeness, and she ties Batman and Superman together. Once the battle has ended, the film plods along in a denouement that seems Viagra induced without the excitement related thereto.
There was just no connection to the story. We are told about hope and given none. We are told about the goodness of people but see no examples. Instead, we are given flat, 2-dimensional characters with no sense of depth even in 3D. The retelling of the Batman legend was interesting, and it made good use of the 3D. The rest of the film was meh. I went in with low expectations and came out sad that even those hadn’t been met.
