Level four changes cut out the fatThe 80/20 rule states that 80 percent of the value comes from 20 percent of the work, which also means that most of what people are doing in their jobs provides little value to them or the company. Level four changes help to eliminate the inefficiencies while creating time and resources to apply to those areas where more value can be found. By cutting out those things that are not necessary, businesses and people can see a huge increase in those things that do count.
One of the hardest things for people to cut out of their life is distorted thinking. Blaming, mind reading, being right all of the time, catastrophizing, personalizing, overgeneralizing, and polarizing are among the thought processes that need to be eliminated to create a better way of thinking and not to use up personal resources and time. In order to begin the process of cutting out the things that are unnecessary, Rolf Smith recommends the use of red tags. By tagging items that do not get used the work flow can be greatly improved. Items that are used all of the time should be closest to the person using them. Those that are less often used need to be further away. Items that are seldom used should be stored, and those that are never used should be eliminated. The results of the processes in cutting things out include empty space, cost control and clean, orderly work places that tend to stay that way. Level four changes leave holes that can be filled with level five changes. |
