The Second best thing about Salt Lake City: Salt Lake Community College Volleyball
The Salt Lake Community College volleyball team is spectacular. In 2013, the team went to Nationals and was only stopped by an injury to its second best player, Bailee Kendall. Kendall has moved on, but the team’s first best player, Carol Grasso is scheduled to be back. The Bruins should also get setter Ailin Donati, who suffered an injury early last season, back to play in the 2014 season.
Grasso is a Swiss Army knife outside hitter. She has multiple tools and she uses them all. She will go straight at the defense with a kill. She will use a dink over the top of the defense. She can get an ace on the serve, she can set up her teammates, and she gets it done on defense by blocking opponents. Announced at an extremely generous 5 foot 10, Grasso’s leaping ability allows her to play big even if she isn’t that tall.
Donati is pure magic with the ball. When she gets her hands on the ball, the other team has no idea where it is going. She can set her teammates up for the kill, or she can get her own set kill. The Salt Lake community did not get to see enough of her last year. If she is healthy this year, she could put up huge numbers and make the difference for the Bruins.
SLCC has had a solid recruiting class, but this is only made possible by its coaching staff, which starts with Head Coach Sue Dulaney. The Bruins compete for the championship every year because Dulaney is able to take a two year program and bring some stability to it. She is also able to find great local and international talent that other teams just can’t get a handle on. Even as the players change for the Bruins, as long as Dulaney and her coaching staff are intact, SLCC should be able to look forward to beautifully competitive, athletic volleyball games.
And the team goes out of its way to make fans welcome at games.
