Sandi Sellner kicks it at Lilac City Comicon
Sandi Sellner, who played Alpha 5 in the Power Rangers, discussed her time on the show as well as her 2 favorite charities while she was at Lilac City Comicon 2017. When Sellner auditioned for the role, the guy literally said “just act like a robot.” The only thing she could think of doing was the robot hands.
“It was the strangest audition I’ve ever been on,” says Sellner.
When she first got the role, she had to use the old Alpha suit. When they decided they were going to keep her on, they made a new one that fit her.
Most of her shoots occurred on a sound stage, so the suit wasn’t too hot. When she did film outside, it was “as hot as Hades.” However, playing Alpha 5 had a set of challenges that were related to production and the suit itself.
“I never got a script prior; I’d get it that morning,” says Sellner. “You couldn’t see out of it (the helmet) whatsoever.”
Her 2 favorite episodes to do were Rangers Back in Time, and the episode where Alpha goes evil. On set, she got along really well with Johnny Yong Bosch and Karan Ashley. It warms her heart to find that the people who grew up with the Power Rangers are now raising their own children on Power Rangers.
Power Rangers was her first time doing something on television. She now does a lot of stage acting and independent films, which is what she always wanted to do.
“I really love stage because you feel everyone’s energy,” says Sellner. Each performance is different, and no one ever knows what’s going to happen.
“You need a lot of training (to be an actor), for sure,” says Sellner. “You have to be able to take yourself out of yourself… and take on that character fully.”
Sellner is involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and she suffers from systemic lupus, limits her ability to take on certain roles.
“The Lupus Foundation of America is an amazing organization,” says Sellner.
