Go see 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'
If you like a movie laid out before you like a fine carpet with no surprises, you will be sorely disappointed in Alice Through the Looking Glass. Just go with it through the first half of the film and enjoy the ride. From beginning to end, Alice is involved in a torrent of adventures, some in the real world and some in Underland. (Though who is to say which is which?)
This film is comfortable enough to allow people to ease into it and original enough to be something that I wish I would have written. While the characters are known, the story is different from any other version of Through the Looking Glass that I am aware of. Lots of time puns make this film silly in timely places, but there are the dark parts as well. Underland is not a place that one wants to lose her head.
The movie has one hell of a climax. It is beautiful and poignant. The soundtrack is on point with its references to the first film and its incorporation of the time of this one. The film provides a nice symmetry, and time flies right by as the audience is immersed in a new Underland that still has the feel of the old. There are few enough films today that allow the movie goer to walk out of the theater feeling uplifted and exhilarated. Alice Through the Looking Glass deserves your time.
