Bachelor finds that looks do not coincide with personality
"How can such a pretty girl have such an ugly side to her?" Bachelor Graham Bunn made this statement about AshLee Frazier, who he is dating on “Bachelor in Paradise.” I don’t know anything about the show, their relationship or her behavior. This isn’t about them or the show, it is about the statement. Pretty women and handsome men are as likely or more likely to have ugly sides as those who are considered unattractive.
People’s personalities are only slightly determined by their looks. When someone is beautiful, he or she is usually afforded perks from childhood through the teen years and beyond. These perks, which ugly people do not get, often lead to a beautiful person feeling entitled. Pretty people only have to be nice when they want something, and when that doesn’t work, they throw a fit.
Unattractive people are usually less adept at manipulating the social situation because they have learned not to be involved socially. They may seem tactless, shy or have any number of attributes that may make it more difficult to get to know them. This doesn’t mean that they are not nice; it just means that they are afraid of being rejected.
In the end, anyone who believes in these generalities is just as bad as anyone who believes that beauty is a sign of goodness. When it comes to individual people, each person is made up of a series of memories, perceptions and choices that dictates who that person is. While someone who is beautiful may be nice to look at, he or she isn’t necessarily nice or mean or anything else just because of the way that he or she looks. When we see past how people look, we can begin to see how beautiful people really are.
