The best Big release this Christmas? 'Jumanji: Welcome to the JUngle'
Better than “Return of the Jedi.” I didn’t just say that, did I? Yes, I did. ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ is a lot of fun. The Rock and Karen Gillan are at there most charismatic, and Jack Black and Kevin Hart are hilarious. This movie packs as much punch as Dr. Smolder Bravestone.
Dwayne Johnson and Gillan are more than just pretty faces. They have their funny moments, too, and they play awkward teens trapped in hot bodies extremely well. Black does well as a girl trapped in a man’s body, which may be a hidden commentary on one of today’s hot topics or it could just be a tribute to Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis in ‘Some Like It Hot.’ either way, it’s hilarious. Rhys Darby of ‘Flight of the Conchords’ fame, does exceptionally well as Nigel the NPC.
Aside from the performances of the main characters and a gruesome bad guy, ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ plays well with its origin story. It doesn’t forsake the board but enhances it. Better, it uses the video game tropes so well that it makes for an entertaining foray for anyone who grew up with the same kind of games in the 1990s. But in all seriousness, just go and watch the cast interact. It’ll be a good way to get away from the controversies of the year.
