Doctor Strange invokes trippy imagery for Marvel Universe
Doctor Strange may be the best film to see while high since Walt Disney’s Fantasia. Not that anyone should be getting high to enjoy a film, it is just that the trippy imagery seen, especially when Strange is finding out about magic, looks like what some people on LSD have described seeing. The world kaleidoscopes seemingly out of control in mind-bending mirrored reality, but that is something that Inception had in part at least. Strange’s visions while exploring the multi-verse are freaky, colorful and weird.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton do as well as should be expected. The magic works. The visuals are stunning, especially 3D. Though there are times when the characters appear to be CGI, it can be forgiven.
While Doctor Strange has a clear relationship to the upcoming Infinity War and the mid-credits scene has some bearing on the next Thor film, it may be that Marvel has just delivered up its second great villain next to Loki. If Doctor Strange 2 continues the path that the after-credits scene sets up, its villain will have a depth previously not seen in other villains.
For those expecting a triumphant, loud-crashing superhero movie, Doctor Strange will disappoint. Its beginning is quieter and more complex, choosing to focus on Strange’s attempt to deal with his loss and regaining of power. It also leaves the audience with a warning for the next film. There will be consequences.
