Fast-paced Action Mystery 'The Stars Were Right'
K.M. Alexander’s “The Stars Were Right” is a tautly written murder mystery with supernatural overtones and background. From the beginning, it grabs you and pulls you into the world of Bell Caravans, some time after the Aligning. While Alexander gives you enough information to realize that this is a world of different types of humanoids with different features, he doesn’t browbeat you with extraneous details that slow the story. Instead, the world is revealed slowly, allowing the reader to take the information as it comes rather than having too much to chew at one time.
That is perhaps the best part of the book. Few fantasy writers are adept enough at knowing what details to show and which to hide. Revealing the wrong details could pull a reader out of the story. Because Alexander knows which details to show and which to keep hidden, the story sucks the reader in as he or she follows the journey of Waldo Bell into the darkest reaches of Lovat and into its upper echelons. Not knowing who to trust, Bell second guesses himself as does the reader. “The Stars Were Right” has enough red herrings and twists in the plot that it is difficult to ferret out just what is happening to Bell. When the mystery is revealed, Alexander’s prose and the reader’s investment in the characters are delivered so well that the reader will want to devour the last 100 pages. There is never a dull moment when you sign up with Bell Caravans. The first in the trilogy is a right good read. Want more book reviews and other writings? Join our Patreon.
