In Rod Serling and the Twilight Zone: The 50th Anniversary Tribute, Douglas Brode analyzing several of the Twilight Zone’s best episodes – among these is “A Passage for Trumpet.” In this episode, Jack Klugman plays Joey Crown, a trumpet player with an alcohol problem. According to Brode, all Crown wants to do is play the perfect song.
What Crown fails to realize is that his gift to the world is a perfect song. His gift is doing what he does with a trumpet. “What Crown creates is his present to humanity, imperfect but hardly worthless. If Crown’s sound brings a little bit of beauty into the life of even one person, he’s achieved the essential human connection necessary for living a worthwhile life.” (p. 51) Among the things that “A Passage for Trumpet” reveals is that you don’t have to create the perfect thing for it to be worthwhile. Just go out and use your talent to make the world a better place by bringing beauty to it. It also shows that even if your problems are self-driven, they are not insurmountable. Seek help, get right and do what you were born to do not what this world wants you to do. You can see “A Passage for Trumpet” at Amazon.
