King Arthur legend gets experimental treatment
Did I like King Arthur: Legend of the Sword? I don’t know. It is a strange amalgamation of heavy and light, gritty with subtle humor, expectations met without being disappointing. It’s as if Guy Ritchie was trying to bring avant-garde film techniques into the mainstream with surreal imagery, music that didn’t quite match the era and scenes that were disjointed while still following a narrative. I applaud the work for its originality, especially given the nature of the source material. It’s not so original that the story is no longer recognizable, and it isn’t so faithful that it bores. It was certainly interesting, even while there were questionable choices made in the beginning.
Spoiler alert: Considering how many time’s we see Arthur’s mother die, this movie is a strange one to be released during Mother’s Day weekend. Still, it feels like King Arthur: Legend of the Sword may have some depth to it, but it could also be all smoke and mirrors. It could become a cult classic, or it could be this decade’s Ladyhawke. Either way, if you want to watch something different without having to go to an arthouse, this movie should do it for you.
