The biggest question that The Amazing Spider-Man raises is what’s its connection with Royal Pains? Not only did Campbell Scott play Peter Parker’s father, but Jill Flint had what amounted to a cameo as the Oscorp receptionist. I kept looking for Mark Feuerstein, Paolo Costanzo and Reshma Shetty – maybe they’ll be in the sequel. Fortunately, C. Thomas Howell also appeared in a role that was just a bit more than a cameo.
When a review starts out talking about the cameos, the film leaves something to be desired. The Amazing Spider-Man was a reboot that no one should have wanted. With the success of Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire, no one needed to spend an hour watching Peter Parker becoming the wallcrawler, especially when the origin story added nothing to the original story.
The new origin story had some cosmetic differences that really didn’t fit with the Peter Parker of the new Spider-Man universe, and there was a coincidental reveal for how he got his mask. By the time the story got rolling into the bad guy, it was too late to establish The Lizard in any more than stereotypical terms that harkened back to the Green Goblin from the Maguire film.
Andrew Garfield just doesn’t have the charisma to carry the film. Thank goodness the filmmakers could afford stars like Emma Stone, Sally Fields and Martin Sheen, even if the script doesn’t use them to their full potential.
