That survival of the fittest theory was adapted to economics to justify the rise and fall of companies within the capitalist system. In an ends justifies the means society, slavery proliferated in the South and the economic loss of those slaves created justification for the Civil War on the South’s side. Employees worked 16 hour days for minimal pay, and owing your soul to the company store became a common occurrence for coal miners.
While the Old Testament has been used to justify slavery and the oppression of the people of color, the admonitions of Jesus Christ are ignored in a Capitalist society. Treating corporations as if they were living beings and holding them to the idea of the survival of the fittest results in corruption, poverty, and the elimination of health care. People who are working may not even be able to afford to eat or have homes.
It isn’t difficult to understand why religious people who deny the work of Darwin would still apply Darwinism to their economics – for the love of money is the root of all evil. What is difficult to understand is that they do not see the difference between their professed beliefs of loving one another as Christ has loved them and their business practices, which turn people into human resources to be used and thrown away when they are no longer contributing to the bottom line enough.
