Regardless of how you feel about transgender issues, the upsetting of the boy-girl ratio has to be one of the worst excuses ever made for denying someone the ability and freedom to live as he or she wants. The idea that one more or fewer boy will make a difference in school is ludicrous. It is difficult even comprehend what upsetting the boy-girl ration means when considered in the light of all-girl and all-boy schools.
Of course, school officials weren’t done with dumb excuses as the allegedly claimed that Rachel’s presence as Rachel would mess up the standardized testing categorization process where students must use their legal names and genders on their birth certificates.
While there are other considerations to be made, like bathroom accommodations, proposals are in place to take care of the physical use of bioparts when they do not match the psychological makeup of a person born with them. Many Native American Tribes have a history of Two-Spirit people, and in India, the Hijra are a part of society though they are low in social status.
For all of the differences in the world, there are some things that are the same. American society should be striving to accept our differences because it has always been our differences that have made us strong. That sometimes means accepting the unusual, and in America, we should all have the right to express ourselves however we see fit as long as it does not interfere with someone else’s rights. It may make people uncomfortable, but that discomfort, much like growing pains, signals that the person is growing.
At the very least, someone who is trying to rationalize and institutionalize his or her prejudice should come up with a better reason than upsetting the boy-girl ratio even if there is a funding element behind it.
