Instead, technology in combination with the Western emphasis on efficiency, the puritan work ethic and the all hallowed presence of the bottom line that concentrates wealth in the hands of a very few while delivering close to no benefits to the oppressed has created a situation where people are working more hours than ever to afford more things that, in the scheme of what life should be about, make a mockery of our existence as human beings.
This unacceptable situation has resulted in the alienation of people from one another. It has also resulted in broken homes where even children who have two parents are raised by various electronic devices from television and video games to Facebook and other internet diversions.
I, unfortunately, no longer have a choice in my future vocation. When I finally must get a job to support my extravagant lifestyle of ramen and the electricity to cook it, it will not be one that I choose, but one that is thrust upon so that I can afford to pay my bills accumulated from years of schooling for skills that will no longer find an expression in our society.
Like a McDonald’s flunky earning minimum wage, I will learn to “treat everyone like an individual in sixty seconds or less.” I will suffer under the yoke of an attempt to become fully realized through education, and I will smile while serving up diabetes to the poor because in the end, the subjugated are too weak to do anything about those who hold the power.
My best bet will be to find a rooming situation with two or three other people somewhere near a Disney park where I could at least partake of the benefits of employment with the Disney Company and form some sort of happiness through the haze of self-inflicted poverty in a society that I have tried to make better and failed.
