I am only at chapter 3, but Byrne has already talked about how music is influenced by the places it is performed. He even puts forth the very real possibility that music is composed for those places. If you know that the church is going to produce a ton of echoes, as a composer, wouldn’t you compose music that sounded good in that venue? The next influencing factor Byrne talks about is technology. But here, it may be the opposite of what we expect. Musicians have evolved to sound like recordings!
I bought a package of tickets in order to see David Byrne at Red Butte. I lost the ticket after waiting in line for 3 hours. Fortunately, I was able to get in and see the show. It really changed how I perceived him and the Talking Heads. I feel like this book is on its way to providing me with another layer of enjoyment for the genius that is David Byrne.
