There is apparently nothing more important going on in the world right now than where James has finally decided to participate in a playground game. Illegal kids at the border, the effects of flooding and storm damage, where the new NSA building is receiving tremendous tax breaks while spying on Americans – none of that matters because a signing like this only happens once or twice in a lifetime.
I write this knowing the hypocrisy in the declaration. I enjoy watching basketball; I like playing fantasy basketball. I love going to the movies, but there has to be a line for the sake of the people who bring us joy through sports and movies, for ourselves and for our involvement in making the world a better place.
While Americans are amusing themselves to death, the real issues and problems of our times will continue to go unsolved, and the degradation of our environment and our lifestyles will go unchecked. There is a time and place for entertainment, and it isn’t all the time and everywhere even if the NBA wants it to be. Enjoy your sports and entertainment in moderation leaving time for friends and family and for those things that really matter that are being left undone.
And don’t worry, if this somehow turns out to be a hoax, you will be sure to hear about it as James goes to his next destination – wherever that is – at least, until he is finally forced to consider a job off of the basketball court.
