Sitting at the confluence of the Zeya and Amur river, Blagoveshchensk was originally founded for its gold and timber industries. Its economy is helped through trade with the Chinese, especially with the city of Heihe across the river. It was a closed city during Soviet rule, meaning that foreigners couldn’t visit and even citizens of the U.S.S.R. were restricted from entering the city.
The weather ranges from cold in the winter, with a low average of -15 degrees Fahrenheit in January, and warm in the summer, with an average high of 81 degrees in July. It averages 22 inches of precipitation throughout the year. The city sits 430 feet (131 meters) above sea level.
