While the Russian Revolution is characterized as communist versus anti-communist, the real factions were more complicated than that. The White Army’s sole uniting factor was that it was against the Communists. It included monarchists, conservatives, liberals, and others. The Red Army consisted of 299 infantry regiments.
Between 1920 and 1922, Blagoveshchensk became a part of the Far Eastern Republic, set up by the Russian SFSR as a buffer state against hostile forces. The Far Eastern Republic was, in theory, autonomous. However, Moscow held a large influence over its actions and politics. In 1932, Blagoveshchensk became the seat of the Amur Oblast government.
